Game:? New York Giants (13-6) vs. New England Patriots (18-0)
Where: University of Phoenix Stadium?(Glendale, AZ)
When: 6:32 PM EST on FOX
Announcers: Troy Aikman & Joe Buck

Tom Brady scoffed when told Wednesday that New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress guaranteed New York will beat Brady’s undefeated New England team in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

“We’re only going to score 17 points?” Brady said before chuckling about it. “OK. Is Plax playing defense? I wish he had said 45-42 and gave us a little credit for scoring more points.”

When the playoffs started, I already had the Super Bowl matchup that I wanted to see in the back of my mind. That game featured the Indianapolis Colts defending their title against the Green Bay Packers. It would’ve been a battle of my favorite quarterbacks playing the game today — Peyton Manning versus Brett Favre — in a showdown that I’ve been waiting years to see. Neither of my teams made the postseason. The Colts won’t have the chance to defend their title. Favre may never get the Packers as far as he did this year before he retires. And yet, the Super Bowl we’ve been given may turn out to be the best contest imaginable. (more…)

I am pleased to announce that Pro Football Critics now has one of the best Free Agency Trackers on the Internet. Your assistance in alerting us of any errors in the list will be greatly appreciated. As signings or releases are made in the coming days, the tracker will be updated accordingly.

Included in the tracker are players that are expected to be traded and players that have been slapped with the franchise tag. Remember that not all of the players are official free agents yet — some of them will not become free agents until next week.

Also, after the coin flip the other day, the final order of the first round of the draft was determined. The Falcons will pick third, the Raiders will pick fourth, and the Chiefs will pick fifth. The order is now reflected on our Draft Order page.

Manning expects to start season opener (AP)
Peyton Manning expects to be in the starting lineup when the Indianapolis Colts open the season against the Chicago Bears. The Colts quarterback, who underwent knee surgery in July, was activated Tuesday and went through a pregame workout with the team before the final preseason game Thursday night. He and the rest of the team went through a short practice Friday before coach Tony Dungy sent them…

Pacman Trade Imminent?
Pacman Jones has made it clear that his days with the Tennessee Titans are over. At a charity basketball game this weekend, Pacman signed a ball with the number 21 — the number of former Dallas great Deion Sanders — instead of his own number, 32. But his agent is adamant in denying that [...]

Backup Smith has 2 INTs in 49ers‘ loss (AP)

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner, left, talks with San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan, right, after their preseason NFL football game in San Francisco, Friday, Aug. 29, 2008. The Chargers defeated the 49ers 20-17. Turner is a former offensive coach for the 49ers.

Alex Smith gave himself passing marks for his performance against his hometown team’s third-stringers and scrubs. Too bad the San Francisco 49ers have already flunked him back one grade on their depth chart. Smith passed for 146 yards but also threw two terrible interceptions, and San Diego’s Eldra Buckley made a one-armed diving catch on a 2-yard touchdown pass with 29 seconds left in the…

Favre Just Another Selfish Athlete
Fans of the Green Bay Packers have had their qualms with Ted Thompson for some time now. The general manager has made head-scratching decisions at times and has always trusted NFL draft picks over free agents, rarely signing anyone of significance and letting veterans go. Apparently, Brett Favre was (and is) frustrated with Thompson because of [...]

Booms and Busts - A Look at the No. 1 Picks Over the Past 20 Years
The NFL Draft has earned a reputation for being little more than a crapshoot. Considering the number of hours NFL scouts spend poring over game tapes, watching athletes run sprints, and quizzing them to find a “Wonderlic” score, it’s a bit odd that there are no “sure things.” Even players drafted first overall in the draft [...]
